ABOUT STEP N GROOVES DANCE SCHOOL

Step N Grooves Dance School, based in Thrapston, Northamptonshire & surrounding areas was founded by Mrs Steph Newman back in September 2000.  The school prides itself on being completely original. It offers its pupils the chance to learn modern (N.A.T.D) Freestyle Disco and Street dance, participate in our many performances and events but most importantly of all, to become part of the Step N Grooves family. We run classes for ages 2 years plus in Thrapston, Oundle and Stanion.

We are quite different to conventional dance schools; we are not competitive, we are all about zero pressure & having fun. This has proven central to our success – our dancers really thrive. Within a Step N Grooves lesson, routines, skills practise and confidence building are often taught in conjunction with playing dancing games and exercises. This style of teaching indirectly allows the dancers to practise and improve on certain techniques, but more importantly gives them a chance to have a giggle.

The school has continued to flourish over the past 20 years and we now have over 200 pupils. The dancers in the school are able to take N.A.T.D examinations once a year, participate in our annual shows and get involved in our displays, presentation mini shows and events (but these aren’t compulsory at all!) We do our own regular “Skills Achievement Cards” which involve the pupils working towards 5 set skills, goals or tasks to receive a recognition medal. We also hold Step N Grooves school holiday dance workshops, teaching workshops and parties. We are well experienced in our unique birthday parties and have also choreographed first wedding dances. Private lessons are available to our pupils.

ABOUT THE TEACHERS

Steph has been dancing since the age of 6 and is practised in Freestyle, Street, Latin American, Ballroom and Rock N Roll. At 14 she decided to start her own little fun dance group in Ringstead Village Hall and this is where Step N Grooves was born, 20 years ago. Over the following 8 years she threw herself into her teaching exams taking a Latin American, Street and 4 Freestyle Professional exams under the N.A.T.D (National Association Teachers of Dancing) She holds the highest possible Freestyle qualification which enables her to train other dance teachers. Her last professional exam report said “A very enthusiastic and experienced candidate with an indepth knowledge of her subject. She will do well with her school”

Step N Grooves grew in size with continued success. Steph has always wanted the school to focus on building confidence with no pressure, making friends & having fun in a non competitive environment. This has been the key recipe for an unmeasured amount of talent from its pupils. Their growth is sensational.

Most recently Steph has embarked on a Level 4 Diploma in Dance Teaching in order to gain another industry recognised level of competency in performance, experience and teaching. She has also begun a Diploma in Counselling children & adolescents to hopefully be able to offer future sessions & workshops that purely focus on building confidence, overcoming anxieties and promoting mental wellness through dance & movement. Steph is married with 2 children, Poppy (9) & Theo (6).

Katie began with Step N Grooves aged 6 years old. 14 years on Steph counts her as one invaluable third of the Step N Grooves Dream Team. She began assisting Steph many years ago alongside taking her amateur dance examinations and has now taken her first two Freestyle Professional exams, allowing her to start teaching her own Step N Grooves classes. Katie’s Associate professional exam report said “Katie clearly and confidently demonstrated good knowledge and understanding of each element of this exam. She has a lovely teaching personality.”  Katie began her first solo Street class in Thrapston in Jan 18 and now has 5 other classes between Thrapston & Stanion.

Frances started with Step N Grooves aged 4 years old. She was painfully shy, but 17 years on now teaches her own Step N Grooves classes. Proof of how far you can come! She is the third part of the Step N Grooves Dream Team again helping Steph in classes for many years while taking her amateur examinations. She has also completed her first two professional examinations and her last report said “Frances delivered all elements of the exam clearly and with confidence. She will be a very good teacher. Well done Frances!”  Frances started teaching with Step N Grooves in March 18 heading up our very first Teeny Small class in Thrapston for 2-3 years. She now teaches 2 classes in Oundle.
